In this Module you will be taken through the subtleties of hearing and seeing the rate and pace of the gait or manner in which the horse moves.

This is a rare and refined skill, one which Dianne has mastered to a high degree and is now ready to teach those with an ‘ear to understand and an eye to see’.

It is an essential JENT key competency.

You will discover in detail how antalgic (pain-avoiding) postures produce an alteration in body mechanics. How over time, the altered mechanics of those postures overload ‘compensatory’ muscle groups, causing secondary issues such as gait abnormalities and ‘contractures’ within specific muscles.

This usually contributes to muscular overload and inevitable fascial distortions.

To determine how the conformation impacts on the functionality of the horse the gait is closely observed as each horse is walked and trotted out, led, backed and turned to assess for:

  • Straightness
  • Head carriage
  • Articulation of spine
  • Equal use of pairs of limbs
  • Range Of Motion (ROM) of joints
  • Individual hoof placement
  • Neurological proprioception dysfunction (spacial perception))
  • Flight patterns

Phone apps will be introduced such as ‘UberSense’ to aid in your learning and appreciation of this essential skill set.
