Course – Equine Photonic Red Light Therapy

This course is delivered independently and open to all 16 yrs and over.

It is Module J2PRLT of the JENT2 Bodyworker Certification (J2JB)

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

Dianne Jenkins (Master JENT Bodyworker)

PREREQUISITES

Students must come to class with knowledge of equine anatomy, directional terms, vocabulary and familiarity with red light information. This information and resources to research are supplied in a pre-course Study Guide provided on registration to complete before the course. We expect students to spend 16+hrs reviewing the study guide prior to the course. This ‘primes’ them for learning and increases all student outcomes.

Please register early to ensure you receive this study guide with plenty of time to learn the contents. Participants must already have good horse ground handling skills and be comfortable working around strange horses in general quiet situations before attending the course.

Note: it is not required to own an approved red light to attend this class, however it is to complete the externship.

OVERVIEW OF PHOTONIC RED LIGHT THERAPY

Since the early 1980s, Photonic Red Light Therapy has been used in the horse world for treating equine concerns and helping owners and trainers keep their horses in top shape. The tissues and cells of the body readily absorb red light at specific wavelengths called the absorption spectrum.

Visible red light is absorbed by the skin very efficiently without much scattering of the photons and is quite safe to use to stimulate acupuncture points and ‘trigger points’; for relief of chronic pain and the accelerated healing of wounds. The red lights used are not lasers, nor infrared (thermal energy).

There are no known reports of adverse side effects regarding this method of Photonic Red Light therapy.

Many studies have reported great results with Photonic Red Light Therapy for the following equine conditions:

  • Emergency first aid: Shock, colic, bleeding control
  • General: Wound healing, cuts, bruises, scrapes and hematomas; pre performance enhancement, arthritis pain, bursitis, burns, oedema, deep muscle injuries, inflammation, tight or sore muscles.
  • Hoof Problems: Abscesses, inflammation, laminitis, navicular and ringbone
  • Legs:  All joint problems, hock, hips, stifle pain and shoulder pain, inflammation, ligament soreness, tendon issues, splints and strains.
  • Body and systemic dysfunction: Sore backs and necks, girth galls, sacroiliac issues, reproduction, salivary gland problems, lack of energy, over excitement and poor condition

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is the first Equine Photonic Red Light Therapy Certification course available internationally which offers students over 40hrs of onsite training under professional supervision, to learn safe and effective techniques using Red Light to stimulate healing and acupoints rather than needles.

The course integrates up to date scientific research and applicable Traditional Chinese Medicine studies with emphasis on developing student skills in assessment of the equine body and evaluation and interpretation of responses to the therapy.

The syllabus provides both practical and documented education in equine postural conformation, gait variances, extensive testing for both internal and external inefficiency and dysfunction in the body systems and a professional approach to the development and application of appropriate condition protocols.

This course is a module of JENT Bodyworker Certification and may be attended by others wishing to be certified: veterinarians, massage and physical therapists, chiropractors, farriers & dentists who wish to add this effective and complimentary therapy to their skills base, plus trainers, managers and horse owners who want to further their education and to take a proactive role in their horse’s health and performance.

After completing the training program and required externship, the student will be able to evaluate posture & movement, test the equine body to determine both external and internal issues, determine through clinical reasoning appropriate treatment plans and confidently apply Photonic Red Light Therapy in both urgent and ongoing situations. Graduates receive certification as an Equine Photonic Red Light Therapist presented by the JENT Institute of Education & Training.

*Please note: Students involved in the JENT 2 Bodyworkers certification program have first preference to positions until 6 weeks before the course starting date.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Students gain a thorough understanding of the science of Photonic red light as a beneficial health care modality and how to explain this to clients
  • To provide a strong knowledge base and practical experience in ‘reading’ the equine body through the development of skills in observation, palpation and examination and grading of reflex tests
  • To select and administer effective protocols for acute and chronic conditions
  • To learn to determine an appropriate number of acupoints to stimulate in any one session
  • To locate acupoints accurately on the equine body
  • To interpret horse responses and make appropriate judgments as to how quickly to proceed and when to conclude a session
  • To learn to map and affect the electromagnetic radiation pathways (meridians) in the equine body
  • To aid in the student’s development of a confident therapeutic acumen that horses can trust
  • To document and report on progress to a client in professional and understandable language
  • To learn a professional and ethical manner and sustainable business practice in the equine therapeutic industry
  • To learn the strengths and limitations of the students own proficiency and when appropriate, how to refer to a veterinarian or other equine health care professional

COURSE ACTIVITIES AND PRESENTATION

On registration, students receive a Study Guide prior to class commencement for independent preparatory home study.   The course syllabus is divided into classroom lectures and hands on practical training to consolidate the learning. Students are provided with a comprehensive colour manual on the first day. Lectures are presented using Power Point for visual learning assistance, videos of case studies for comparisons and methodology, and drawings and specimens of the equine skeleton to prepare students for the practical exercises. Subject matter is reinforced with sequential reviews each day. Practical classes are supervised and monitored to ensure students succeed at the tasks and the environment is kept safe. Class numbers are restricted to ensure one on one guided practice in the practical sessions. Each evening students are required to review the days learning, complete a short open book quiz and to read selected pages in preparation for the next day. The quizzes are reviewed in class each morning where students can self-assess and reinforce their learning. Students must attend all 5 days.

In order to give the class a range of experiences, a number of suitable horses are provided for use.  Practical portions involve each pair of students working with a Group 1 case study horse on days 1, 3 & 5 to administer the therapy, observe and note progress, determine protocols and document results.

On days 2 & 4, students work on a variety of horses, Group 2, which provides practice in treating different conditions, running meridians and reading body language, all essential for students to gain professional skills in this modality. The instructor demonstrates each task or technique after which the students immediately repeat and practice the exercise under observation with assistance and evaluation.

On the fifth day, a summary of each Case Study horse is presented to the rest of the class with student findings and recommendations. Lively discussion ensues with the teacher and other students suggestions and sharing of experiences.

EXTERNSHIP AFTER THE COURSE

Evaluation: Certification is earned by passing the required externship which involves the practice and documentation of learning activities and case studies in the field following the course. Students have 6 months to submit their completed externship. A required score of 70% of this written work is required to pass. Should the student not reach the pass mark for 1 or 2 sections of the externship, they will be informed of the necessary corrections and may resubmit those portions again. Students failing more than 2 sections are required to repeat the whole externship. 3 submissions (including portion attempts) are permitted. Students must demonstrate through the externship their understanding of the material and concepts taught in class to receive certification.

EXTERNSHIP DETAILS

CASE STUDIES

Horses used as case studies are to have only Photonic Red Light Therapy during the externship so students learn the capacities and limitations of red light after which they can safely and effectively integrate red light with other therapies in the future.

It is not essential to own a red light for the class as one can be provided for student use, however it is imperative an approved light is used for the externship and certification.   Different types of lights are displayed and discussed during the course and lights are available for purchase if required at the course.

Students to choose 5 equine subjects if they are already professional (vet, dentist, chiro, osteo, physio, bodyworker, MFR, massage or Bowen Therapist). Non Professionals need only submit 4 case studies.

Horse no 1: In work (3 days a week or more) and has had bodywork and/or acupoint stimulation before.

Need not have any known issues. 6-8 sessions in 3 weeks.

Horse no 2: In work (3 days a week or more) and has not had bodywork or acupoint stimulation therapy at all.                              6-8 sessions in 3 weeks. Need not have any known issues. Begin with 2 sessions of just the essential points.

Horse no 3: Not in work at all for the 3 weeks necessary and has had bodywork and/or acupoint stimulation therapy. 6-8 sessions in 3 weeks. Need not have any known issues.

Horse no 4: Any horse (may have had or not had any bodywork) with a new injury or condition, e.g. colic, bleeding, shock, severe wound, eye condition, recent injury to a joint. Do not choose long standing issues such as a long term joint injury (this example would be better as one of the other case studies). Report on 2-3 sessions or until issue settles (Owners still to call their veterinarian as they would normally) Report clearly only the Initial history and observations relevant to the situation. Fill in the EPRLT Session Report each visit and a final summary at the end. May be only 1-3 sessions.

Horse no 5: This horse to be the last case study you work on for the greatest learning outcomes.

Any one of your clients’ horses you have worked on within the last 2 months with another therapy. Integrate EPRLT into your routine as you see fit for 3 separate sessions, no more than 2 weeks apart. Use Initial History & Observations form, a shortened Evaluation & Reflex Test Results Table. Add your own therapy moves to the Session report (still include the horse pic with points selected drawn on it). Final Observations form plus a ½ page summary. Comment on differences in the outcomes of your other therapies when integrating Red Light.

EQ1600 EPRLT Required Externship Case Study Forms
  1. Form A Initial & Final Observations (plus a horse diagram with acupoints chosen marked on and named for each of these sessions)
  2. Form B EPRLT Session Plan
  3. Form C Reflex Test Results Table
  4. Own format for a Final Summary

Notes on each

  1. Fill in form A in the appropriate sections at the initial session, then complete this form at the final session. At the final session if the observations are the same as the initial first time, write only the word ‘same’. (It takes too long to mark if the assessor has to read every comment and find they are the same.)
  2. One form B EPRLT Session Plan for each session to include current history, dynamic observations and the acupoints (named) stimulated during the session, drawn on the horse diagram. Preferably do this whilst with the horse not later on at home. Also indicate on the diagram any areas you might have used a larger surface light and why.
  3. One completed form C Reflex Test Results Table (all sessions on the one 2 page form) Grade the reactions between 1 and 5 as in class. In section 10, note any Assoc. pt reactive not just a grading for all. A collective grading may be given at the first session if the back is reacting acutely.
  4. Final summary to include breed, age and gender of the horse, comparison in changes, outcomes, conclusions & recommendations. Describe all differences EPRLT made and how you would proceed with this horse into the future. Also any feelings you have about the case study. Anything you might have changed in retrospect? The owners overall comments and what you learned from this horse.

Minimum length ½ page 12 font. Place this form at the start of each case study in your presented externship.

MERIDIANS & MAJOR ACUPOINTS

Student to submit 7 separate pictures using a photograph of real horse (own horse is recommended) (Not to use the one in the manual or any drawing depicting internal structures)  One for each of the 6 meridian pairs (e.g. Lung & Large Intestine), plus one showing the Conception and Governing vessel meridians.

Draw in freehand or computer generated line each of the 14 meridians

Name each meridian and denote by legend, all Essential, Master, Influential, Association, Accumulation and Ting points and any other points of note you commonly use along each meridian.

 ACUPOINT GROUPINGS LABELLING

Images and Text

  1. Five photographs, 1 for each of the following groups of acupoints. Locations clearly indicated with ‘stick on’ coloured dots and later labelled (electronically or by hand) with the Acupoint name. Each group to be the same coloured dots. Please choose 5 different colours if possible.
  2. Essential Health Points
  3. Master points
  4. Influential points
  5. Association points
  6. Ting points

Ensure the images are large enough to see the acupoints clearly with the horse filling the complete picture.

The pictures must include some anatomical landmarks (unnamed) on the horse in each frame for reference for the assessor to see if the locations are correct. E.g. LI 16, need to see the horse’s head, neck and shoulders. Please no close-ups.

  1. Write a ½ page text of information on each particular grouping. Do not cut and paste manual information. Research and form your own phrases.

SUMMARIES/ESSAYS

Two (2) essays are required each a minimum of 2 pages long at 12 font, 1.5 spacing.

  1. The first to include some history, the properties of red light, how red light works (cite references), examples of uses of red light (e.g. use a case study summary) for activating acupoints and wound healing, how treatment and results differ from other therapies with examples and how red light can be integrated with other modalities.
  2. The second to include your experiences throughout this externship, difficulties and issues that arose, how you dealt with them in the field, how you related to the owners and what you learned from those experiences. Also compare the responses of both case studies not in work, and both case studies in work.

Discuss findings when integrating EPRLT with your other bodywork.

Presentation of Externship Documentation and further Guidelines will be discussed in detail during class
